Haldia Dock Complex

Haldia Dock

The development of Haldia Dock Complex has a very interesting background. It would be pertinent to roll back in time and delve into the genesis of the complex. As popularly known, the strategic location of Kolkata and the state of West Bengal as an important sea trade channel has facilitated trade and commerce since the colonial era. It was to safeguard their trade interests and british colonial interests that the Kolkata Port Trust was developed and commissioned way back in 1870.Slowly, the interest passed from British India to our hands with the attainment of freedom from the rules of the British Raj.

One of the major ports in the Eastern region, the Calcutta Port was the sole handling port at that point of time. Continuous increase in the volume of trade and widespread development necessitated the setting up of a new Dock Complex. Hence, a suitable site was identified midway between the sea and the Kolkata Port with a view to improve the efficiency and volume of trade and handling capacity. It was in 1968 that work in Haldia Dock Complex was started and the Port was commissioned in 1977.
It was an ambitious and one of its kinds of project at that point of time. One of the major and first port projects in India that would provide cargo handling facilities at such a comprehensive level. Today, the Haldia Dock has led to the development and setting up of an entire industrial town which provides opportunities and employment directly or indirectly to hundreds and thousands of people.
